An Ode to 2024 – by Jackie Elliott

As we now conclude the outdoor season,
A new rhyme is in order, I reason,
It’s been a blast,
From start to last,
Now to short mat we ease-in,

The weather has not always been our friend,
Its driven Brian and the green team, round the bend,
But I’ll say it out loud,
YOU’VE DONE US VERY PROUD
So for 2025, please keep up the trend.

Ladies, a great season in the ESL
Third in the league, we gave the opposition hell
Calmly led by Captain Janet
And all the others that ran it
First next year? Maybe time will tell??

Gentlemen another great year!
We salute you with plenty of beer,
With Brian at the lead,
The Border Cup and League we did succeed,
Horley now are a club to fear?

Our Socials and celebrations have been a blast,
Thanks to Janet A and her full and part time cast,
They have cooked, cleaned and partied,
Trophies, food and gifts they have carted,
Thinking caps on please as next year is approaching fast!

Friendship and Jubilee Leagues have done well,
Too many people to thank, but you have all been swell,
Games mornings are fun,
With a coffee and bun,
Please join in next year we impel.

Huge congratulations all our club winners,
Whether you be, established, a novice or beginner,
You’ve had Trophies as an award,
And maybe your name on a board,
And don’t forget to celebrate the end of season Dance and Dinner,

Last but not least huge congratulations to our Club victors Tessa and Brian,
Who completed their final Champion of Champions match second time of tryin’
To the Unbadged champion of surrey, Denise,
Her and Jackie Badged, if you please!
And to all the members whose support is undying.

(Be sure to look regularly at the SM ‘News Update’ on the SM website page – https://horleybowlingclub.org/short-mat-news/

Teams and playing dates for all those who entered the Wednesday triples league are pinned to the notice board. Those who I see will be handed theirs.

The very simple rules and a result sheet will also be on the board, by the time the competition starts on Wednesday the 30th of October at 2:00pm.

Short Mat Coaching

For all short mat bowlers who wish to take advantage of some preseason coaching and tips on marking, our coaches plan to hold a couple of sessions prior to the opening of the season.

We would suggest that any new members and those who have played but are still relatively new to short mat to book up for one or both of these sessions.

We are looking to hold them on either the Wednesday, Thursday or Friday, either afternoon or evening prior to opening, the day and time will depend on your preference.

Please let Allan Weller (07955 161443‬) know if you wish to participate, and advise your day and time preference.

Short Mat competitions

Entries for the singles competition close on  Saturday 21st September .
Entries for the pairs and 80 up will close after the meet and greet meeting on the 27th.
Anybody wishing to enter after these dates will go on a reserve list.

150 Club winners

Congratulations to the 150 Club winners

1st prize No62. Colin Squires.
2nd prize No26. Seth Kellar.
3rd prize No22. Liz Cargill.

The Club has a need for a pair of apprentice gardens to work along Peter and Eileen O’Malley, as they are finding it a bit harder these days to keep up the fine work they do on the flower beds.

It will be one morning a week either Monday or Wednesday, whilst the green team are on site. This will be leading to taking over the gardening duties.
