Etiquette – Short Mat

1. Be on time for your match.
2. Shake hands with your opponent before and after a game (Covid-19 permitting).
3. Respect the playing surface. Do not drop bowls onto the mat.
4. Always wear the correct footwear.
5. The Skip shall have sole charge of the team, and the players shall observe his/her instructions.
6. Switch off your mobile phone.
7. Stand behind the player on the mat, out of their eye line, and stay still so as not to distract them.
8. Stay on your own mat and support your team.
9. Do not obscure the mat boundary markers or the centre line markers.
10. Stand well back from the head when your opponent is delivering his/her bowl and be aware that weighted shots may send bowls in your direction.
11. Do not remove bowls from the head until the outcome has been agreed with your opponent.
12. Wait until your opponent’s bowl has come to rest before taking control of the mat.
13. The Skip, together with the opposing Skip, shall decide all disputed points and, when both agree, their decision shall be final.
14. If an umpire is called to measure a shot, stand well away from the head until a decision is given.
15. Encourage and praise the rest of the team, including the skip.
16. Never criticise your opponent, the mat, or your own team. If you cannot say something positive, don’t say anything at all.
17. Always appear to be enjoying the game.
18. Compliment your opponent on a good shot.
19. Admit a fluke with grace.
20. Be a gracious winner and a good loser.
21. Learn the Laws of the Game and abide by them.
